Bloomsday Film Festival: Horrible Creature and Q&A with Áine Stapleton
12 June 7pm- Dublin
The Bloomsday Film Festival presents Horrible Creature and Q&A with Áine Stapleton on Thursday, June 12th at 7pm in Belvedere College.
In 1915, James Joyce and Nora Barnacle travelled with their young children, Giorgio and Lucia, to Switzerland to escape the turmoil of World War I. Lucia Joyce later trained as a professional dancer with artists including Margaret Morris, and performed throughout Europe, until her career ended suddenly in the early 1930s. She was forced into psychiatric care by her brother and underwent experimental treatments at various hospitals across Europe. She remained in psychiatric care for 47 years until her death in 1982.
Horrible Creature was filmed at locations throughout Switzerland where Lucia spent time, including her primary school in Zurich and a psychiatric hospital near Geneva. Here, Lucia’s own writings and experiences are interpreted by a cast of international experimental dance artists to conjure her world between 1915 and 1950. The film fearlessly explores her difficult family life, her unproven illness, and her undoubted talent.
This film is one of a series of films about Lucia Joyce by Áine Stapleton, which challenge the accepted biography of Lucia’s life and consider the complexity of her mental strain.

The Space Between by Kathleen Doherty
13 June 7:30 pm.
Lumen Street Theatre Building, Limerick
The performance blends aerial dance, performance art, composition and new media. It invites audiences into a world shaped by trauma, healing, and the quiet search for connection - a poetic offering of stillness, tension, and breath.
Set in an abandoned warehouse, the performance traverses blinking scenes, blood-red silks, and shifting figures navigating cycles of feeling. At its core, this work speaks to the liminal, the no longer and not yet, while honouring the fragile resilience of being human.
The Space Between is directed and created by Irish multi-disciplinary artist Kathleen Doherty, with a team of international interdisciplinary collaborators across aerial, dance, film and sound including local artists composer Jacob Woulfe and new media artist Scott Robinson, featuring co-creators and performers Lee Harry Clayden and Hannah Scully.
Note: Due to the themes included in this performance, attendees must be over the age of 16.
Presented in partnership with the Limerick Mental Health Association, the Belltable/Limetree, and Fidget Feet Aerial Dance Company.
Funded by The Arts Council of Ireland and Limerick City & County Council.
“The embodiment of art equals life.” – Feedback from Karosta Festival, Latvia

Clonmel Arts Junction Festival
4-13 June Various Artists
Clonmel Junction Arts Festival was founded in 2001 to celebrate touring theatre and live music.
Today, it is the pre-eminent arts organisation in Clonmel, providing a platform for regional and national artists, the infrastructure to develop a body of professional arts workers in the town, and a hub for national and international artists to share space and ideas with a large urban town at the heart of a rural hinterland.
A multi-disciplinary Arts Festival, Junction celebrates the town of Clonmel and the talented artists who live and work here. The ‘junction’ of the title refers to bringing people together: audiences and artists, local and international companies, town and country.
This year there will be a performance from John Scott's Irish Modern Dance Theatre (Hyperactive), and workshops by Tipperary Dance's Splash Lab. There will also be circus workshops by Cikada Circus.
