Seminar ‘Ukrainian Traditional Dance in its International Context’
To illustrate their support for the people of Ukraine and their rich culture, the International Council for Traditional Music’s Study Group on Ethnochoreology are delighted to present an online seminar by Dr. Andriy Nahachewsky on 'Ukrainian Traditional Dance in its International Context' on Friday, 11th March at 13:00 (CET).
Dr. Andriy Nahachewsky is Huculak Chair Emeritus at the University of Alberta, Canada. Currently serving as the Secretary of the ICTM Study Group on Ethnochoreology, he brings a broad comparative perspective to the intense, rich, and diverse world of Ukrainian dance.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has brought this European region to the forefront in international news. Many Ukrainians partake in dance socially, as part of their ritual lives, and as art. Furthermore, Ukrainian dance representations on stage have become a prominent symbol of Ukrainian identity around the world. This presentation introduces the rich and diverse worlds of Ukrainian dance. The current war compels a post-colonial lens and engagement with the international context.
Chaired by Dr. Catherine Foley, Chair of the ICTM Study Group on Ethnochoreology
