Engagement Opportunity- States of Independence

States of Independence

What does it mean to be living in an 'independent' state, a republic where some still question if everyone has equal rights, a republic that one hundred years ago, set out to provide ‘religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its Citizens’? (Proclamation of Independence).

Taking the subject of independence and Ireland’s commemoration of the Anglo-Irish War of Independence (1919 – 1921) as a point of departure, The Library and Arts Service and Commemorations Committee of Cork County Council, supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, invites proposals for  an artist to develop a creative project examining what “independence” means to different people who call County Cork home. Proposals should be centred on an artist-led critical reflection on what the struggle for independence meant one hundred years ago and what ideas of independence and freedom mean to us today.

Beginning with conversations and ranging from the political to the personal, issues raised in this project may span notions of liberty: international, national and individual, cultural and sexual identity, individuality, democracy and freedom of expression. The artist will connect with different people in the county who have experience of being marginalised or of having their voices unheard. The artist will facilitate a creative enquiry into the meaning of words like freedom, democracy, liberation and independence. The artist will then make a piece of work in response to these conversations. A final public outcome of these conversations and engagements will be determined by the nature of the artist’s practice.

This project will take place over 9 – 12 months, with a fee of €12,000 inclusive of all expenses and VAT. The selected artist must agree to undergo Garda Vetting and present proof of insurance. The selected artist will comply with Government Covid-19 guidelines and Cork County Council Health and Safety policies and procedures.
