Compagnie Nacera Belaza in Perforamnce

Compagnie Nacera Belaza “L’infime” et “Création 2018: première impression”.

This new double-bill, “L’infime” et “Création 2018: première impression”, is the first ever Irish collaboration with the acclaimed Algerian-French choreographer, Nacera Belaza, featuring  two Irish premieres of her mesmerizing work with performers from Morocco, Algeria, The Netherlands, France and Ireland. This work features three dancers based in Ireland, Magdalena Hylak, Millie Daniel Dempsey and Emily Kilkenny Roddy

“How to be anchored in the most singular being and open infinitely to the other, to the world?” In her latest solo, “L’infime” Nacera Belaza delves into a new and perilous space: an individual alone on the stage, the intimacy of solitude, what is personal and how it can be connected universally to encourage the full expression of our humanity.

Born in Algeria, Nacera Belaza moved to France at the age of five, where she studied French literature, before focusing on dance and establishing her own company in 1989.
Nacera works with dancers from Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon, Egypt, and Palestine and has performed internationally in Europe, Africa, Asia, Indonesia, and North America. In France, Nacera Belaza's company regularly performs at prestigious festivals and venues, highlights include: Festival  Montpellier Danse (2006, 2014, 2016), Rencontres Seine-Saint-Denis (2008, 2010), Festival of Avignon (2009, 2012) and Biennale de la danse de Lyon (2010, 2014), MuCEM - Musée des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée (2015) and Centre des Monuments Nationaux (2017).  Nacera is a much sought after artist and her singular vision, an approach to choreography as an acute sensibility of movement has brought the self-taught Algerian dance artist global recognition. She was awarded the esteemed title of Chevalier des Ordes des Arts et Lettres for her services to dance in 2015, and in 2017 her company was recognised as a French Ministry of Culture ‘national company with international reach’. Other awards  include the 2008 Prix de la Revelation Choregraphique by the French Critics Syndicate and the 2009 Award La Danse in Quebec.  Nacera Belaza lives and works in Paris and Algeria and her path has continually maintained a coming and going between both places.
