Audition Call Out: Hear my Hands by Karen Gleeson

Karen Gleeson is seeking a female dance performer for a part in her upcoming project, 'Hear my hands'.

‘Hear my hands’ is a multi-disciplinary collaborative performance piece, fusing dance, sign language and audio video projection.This project was originally developed as a solo collaborative performance but Karen is now seeking a dance performer to develop her vision further.

She is looking for a mover with a contemporary dance background who is skilled in intricate movement isolations and detailed vocabulary.

Initially, the work was a solo dance performance but it is now being expanded to a dance and movement duet work. The successful dancer will perform alongside an experienced performance artist from the deaf community.

Project Schedule:

Applicants must be available for the full project from the 4th April until 7th May 2022. There will be a further week of work at a later date TBC.


This is a paid role. The successful dancer will receive a fee of €650 per week for six weeks, totalling €3,950.

Audition Process:

Audition is by invite only. After completing the application process, Karen will then invite the successful applicants to audition. It will be a short audition comprising of three parts. Karen will lead the audition. She will teach some choreographic movement from the show and then will ask attendees to adapt the movement to highlight their unique movement style. She will then give some improvisational tasks.

Audition venue:

The audition will be held at Dance House on Foley Street in Dublin from 10am until 1pm on Friday 12th November 2021.

About the work:

‘Hear my hands’ is a multi-disciplinary collaborative performance piece, fusing dance, sign language and audio video projection. The work explores the use of sign language and the use of movement as a form of communication, delving into the frustration and difficulties involved with miscommunication in relationships. This work will be created with the support of the Arts Council Dance Project Award 2021 and will be presented at The Civic and the Project Arts Centre.

Karen's aim is to create a work that both the Deaf and the Hearing Communities can understand and enjoy. To make this possible, she will work with a team of collaborators, fusing mediums in order to create a more accessible work for a wider audience.
