Traditional Irish Dance Master Jonathan Kelliher will deliver a workshop in the very unique and beautiful North Kerry “Munnix” style traditional Irish dance. This style dates to the early 1700s and was handed down through the generations to present day by traditional dance masters.
Dance experience is an advantage but not required as Jonathan will give you the history of this special dance style from North Kerry and teach you the basic steps and how to put them together.
Jonathan is the Artistic Director of Siamsa Tíre’s National Folk Theatre programme. He has been studying the North Kerry style of dance since the age of 6 and followed in the footsteps of a long line of North Kerry Dance Masters to become one of the most respected voices in discussing the style, its history and is known as one of the best exponents of the style in Ireland.
He has performed in and directed numerous productions for Siamsa Tíre, including Evolution for the Dublin Fringe Festival, Tearmann, Rithim/Rhythm, a collaboration with Printz Dance project. In 2009 he directed Moriarty, he performed in What the Folk at the Dublin & Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. He directed and performed in Anam for Dublin Dance Festival in 2016 and directed An Ghaoth Aniar for Siamsa Tíre in 2018.
Dancer from the Dance
This workshop forms part of Irish Modern Dance Theatre's Dancer From The Dance: Festival of Irish Choreography
Curated by revered Irish choreographer John Scott, the festival crosses many national borders, practices, ethnicities and generations. This 3rd edition connects live performance with the incredibly visual artform of dance films and live-streaming, and honours the diversity of Irish choreography from the four corners of the world. The Festival will celebrate live dance, dance films and new works in progress, as well as traditional Irish Céilí dancing.
Dancer From The Dance draws national and international attention to Irish choreographers north and south of the border and from the greater Irish diaspora. Following huge critical success in New York and at home in Dublin in 2019, and last year in 2020, the festival in 2021 aims to celebrate age, gender and the ethnic diversity of Irish dance artists.
DANCER FROM THE DANCE 2021: In collaboration with Dance Ireland, Project Arts Centre, Dance Limerick, Irish Arts Center (New York), Smock Alley Theatre, OntheBoards & Centre Culturel Irlandais
Funders: The Arts Council of Ireland and Dublin City Council.
