Alexandrina Hemsley

Our Healthier Dancer Days this year invite you to take some time out to tune in to the needs of the dancing body and mind.  This programme is dedicated to the unique and unprecedented challenges for dancers at this time with in depth sessions on yoga for dancers, somatics in action, mindful practice, supplementary training and conditioning, and advocating for your needs. The workshops offer information and techniques to take into your training and practice and support you to navigate the months ahead.

Access, Intimacy and Retrieval; Creating Your Own Access Rider
with Alexandrina Hemsley

Through an anti-ableist, anti-racist perspective, Alexandrina Hemsley will lead a session on dancers' wellbeing,  working conditions and access to creative institutions. Workshop participants will be invited to think-feel through their own access requirements and needs within a conversational and relaxed space. Drawing from a social disability model, we will attend to the ways in which constructs of institutional and systemic injustice and harm can be disabling and the impacts that this disabling has on a dancers health and well-being.

This workshop extends an emphasised invitation to Black and disabled dance artists.

ABOUT Alexandrina

Alexandrina has recently founded her own organisation Yewande 103. Yewande 103 formalises the past 10+ years of Creative Director Alexandrina Hemsley’s work in the contemporary dance field as a choreographer, performer, writer, mentor and educator.

Alexandrina Hemsley’s practice is shaped by the morphing disciplines of dance, dance for camera, live art, theatre, mentoring, creative and critical writing. Driven by an interest in fracturing, connectivity, displacement & emotionality, they hope to find and share ways of expressing felt, lived realities. They work with intricate improvisation scores and vivid performance environments which insist on conjuring embodied enquiries into a multiplicity of voices. This includes work within organisations around anti-racism, anti-ableism and embodied advocacy. It is a life long, nuanced undertaking. Alexandrina is Associate Artist at Cambridge Junction, Board Member of Chisenhale Dance Space and International Associate Artist 2020/21 at Dance Ireland.

This workshop is free to all.
