DI Residency: Justine Doswell

Tue 7 Aug 2018 - Tue 14 Aug 2018
10:00 - 18:00

Dancing in all its forms cannot be excluded from the curriculum of all noble education; dancing with the feet, with ideas, with words, and, need I add that one must also be able to dance with the pen? Friedrich Nietzsche

Movement language and verbal language are different in nature, one uses the body and the other words, but they share a fundamental objective: to communicate ideas, thoughts and feelings. Where do they overlap, intersect, provoke or even contradict each other?

During her residency Justine will research and collaborate with theatre maker, actress and writer, Fionnuala Gygax; director and writer Kate Guelke; dance artists Ella Clarke, Katherine O'Malley, Emily Kilkenny Roddy, Millie Dempsey and musician Brian Hogan in a series of structured improvisations that will be documented for future development.

Justine is interested in the idea of bringing a writer into the studio. Language has its place within the body that is the foundation of thinking, of people's understanding and processing of stimuli. She wants to focus on what a writer could contribute in the present moment with collaborative structures that take place in “real-time” and yield spontaneous and transitory moments of meaning. Dialogue and interaction that crosses disciplines. How will the writer respond to, translate or interpret what is manifesting? What conversations, relationships and stories could unfold?

Justine is very much looking forward to having the space and time to investigate these ideas with the support of her collaborators and Dance Ireland.
