DI Residency: Deirdre Griffin

Mon 22 Jul 2019 - Fri 16 Aug 2019
10:00 - 18:00

Deirdre Griffin will be in residence for working on a new production, Soup, in collaboration with sound artist Craig Cox for her company Headonbody.

It is a performance piece that mixes movement, sound design and textiles into a bizarre tapestry depicting the altered perception of the recently bereaved. It is a blackly comic kinetic shrine to a lost parent, built on a three
dimensional collage of personal and cultural associations. The performance will use a combination of movement and costume to create a kind of doppelganger character: a fey creature that studies, mimics and parodies bereavement.

Deirdre’s school years training in Irish dancing, her study and career in contemporary movement and her current training in acrobatics and hand balance all mix to form a mutant physical language that navigates the space and interacts with the various objects, performing bizarre “scenes” that see-saw between hilarious andharrowing.

While Deirdre is lead artist and director, sound designer Craig Cox has been an important collaborator since the project’s beginning. Because so many of Deirdre’s memories come through sound, especially daytime radio and her favourite songs, she always knew that this would be a vital design element. Craig has been building a sonic world that incorporates motifs from songs and radio references with his own original composition, producing a score that harmonises with the shifting character of the physical performance.

This work was shown as part of a work-in-progress version as part of Dublin Dance Festival’s First Looks program in May 2019.
