El-Funoun Dance Troupe

This one-day masterclass with four dancers from El-Funoun Palestinian Popular Dance Troupe will introduce you to the company’s unique and virtuosic approach to Dabke, the traditional dance of Palestine. Dabke is about using the soul rather than the technique. It is both collective dance and individual improvisation. During this masterclass, you will absorb Dabke and create your own.

The first hour is the warm-up practiced by the company, a set of exercises for muscular strengthening and joint mobility, as well as theatre-based games. The second hour focuses on teaching traditional Dabke steps and one to two group Dabke dances, the Dalouneh and Tayara. After a short break, the second session is dedicated to new Dabke. Inspired by the traditional movements and music, this is the evolution of Dabke as faster, more complex, with more sequences, more jumps and turns, more varied use of space, and extending through the whole body to include the torso, arms and hands. Dabke is based on improvisation around foundational movements, by the Laweeh (the leader of the dance), followed by the group. To finish the masterclass, we will use what we have learnt in the session to work on improvisations in the group.

ABOUT El-Funoun Dance Troupe

As part of their 2022 international dance residency with Ciotóg, members of El-Funoun Dance Troupe will lead a Dabke dance masterclass, hosted by Dance Ireland, in Dancehouse on Saturday 13th August.

This is El-Funoun’s third visit to Ireland. In 2017 they performed Rooster and Partial Memory, and participated in a dance exchange with contemporary and Irish dancers, and they gave a presentation at the 2015 Galway Dance Days Festival & Corp_Real International Symposium, both hosted by Ciotóg under the direction of Ríonach Ní Néill.

During their 2022 residency, El-Funoun will be dancing across Ireland. They will be collaborating with Ríonach Ní Néill, with Catherine Young Dance, and they are performing and giving a masterclass at the Big Bang Festival of Rhythm on Sunday 14th August.

If you are interested in participating in some of the dance residency activities, please contact Ríonach directly at Rionach@ciotog.ie
