This class aims to offer dancers what they need to set them up for the day in a way that suits their own body and mind. A range of useful physical tools will be suggested with a sense of invitation. Everything is optional - a framework through which to exercise choice, interpretation, empowerment and pleasure in moving.

Starting with breath, we'll move through a series of floor, static and traveling exercises - taking a released approach to the fundamentals of technique. Through repetition of these small chunks of movement, we'll aim to deepen, refine and relax our experience of them. By grounding into familiar patterns of alignment and co-ordination (referencing the work of Ross McKim, developed from Robert Cohan, as well as other contemporary dance vocabularies), we'll aim to make space in the body - in pursuit of a big, rangy, sculptural physicality full of freedom and power. We'll then channel this into some extended phrases shifting through space. These will challenge our technique while giving us the opportunity to play with expression through textures, dynamics and musicality - and let us really dig in to the sheer joy of dancing together.

BIOGRAPHY

Jack is a dancer living and working in Glasgow. His practice is rooted in generous, expansive physicality; emphasising liveness; meaningful connections with people; integrity and empowerment; political consciousness, quietly disrupting hierarchies, and radical joy. As an Irish dancer, he toured with Rhythm of the Dance, Celtic Legends and Ériu Dance Company, before pursuing classical and contemporary training. He has since performed for Éowyn Emerald & Dancers, Shotput, Michael Clark, Farah Saleh, Jonzi D, Aya Kobayashi & Monika Smekot, Gwynne Bilski, Rob Heaslip, Company Chordelia and Barrowland Ballet. He has taught company class as a guest teacher for New Adventures and Stopgap Dance Company, and regularly teaches adults from absolute beginner to professional level at Scottish Ballet, Dance Base, The Work Room, Dance Glasgow and others. He facilitates inclusive dance workshops, mentoring and practitioner training with Paragon, and for Indepen-dance. Jack trained at Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance and is also qualified as a Gym Instructor.
