Youth Ballet West

Formed in 2007 Youth Ballet West (YBW)is a non profit making organization offering young dancers from the west of Ireland the opportunity to audition for, assist in the creation of, and perform in dance productions of the highest standard.

Youth Ballet West was launched on Friday 14th December 2007.  The company performed Les Patineurs originally choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton in 1937 and which has been described as, ‘a pure dance display of virtuosity disguised as a joyous ode to skating’.

The group is funded by the Arts Council, Galway City Council and Galway County Council, and training is provided for these talented dancers aged between 13 and 23, who are selected during an annual audition process.

“By forming the company we were able to increase performance opportunities and bring ballet really into the public eye in Galway,” says Director Phyllis Hayes who along with her sister Judith Sibley, the Artistic Director, founded the company in 2007.

YBW is currently working in partnership with Macnas, and has previously worked with Athnery Music school, Galway Technology Institute, Cathy Sharp Danse Ensemble, Chrysalis Dance and Corrib Dance Academy. These collaborations focus on the creation of new work for YBW, giving additional performance opportunities and challenging the young dancers with alternative dance styles and venues, while broadening the audience for dance and ballet.
