Dereck Cayla
Professional

Dereck Cayla is a French/ Irish Dance Artist based in Amsterdam since 2009- and now currently in Ireland.

He graduated in 2008 from the Conservatoire National de Musique et de Danse de Paris in contemporary dance. In 2009 Dereck joined, as a dancer, the choreographic centre ICK Dans Amsterdam, under the artistic direction of Pieter C. Scholten and Emio Greco. After which, in 2016 decided to pursue his career as a freelance dancer and worked with various choreographer such as Robin Orlyn, Nicole Beutler, Roshanak Morrowatian, Jesus de Vega amongst others.

In 2019, with the desire to explore dance outside of theatres, Dereck initiated his first choreographic research, deeply rooted in the body and physicality, which resulted in the duet piece 'Mermaids' and the short dance film 'Sirènes'. The natural landscape of Patagonia of the film and the presentation of the duet on the Sloterplas lake of Amsterdam were the steppingstone for him to realise which audience he wanted to address to. In his quest of reaching out to more people, as well as getting closer to his own self-expression, Dereck focused on his drawing practice and found through it a new medium, free from the conditioning of his dance background.

In March 2024 he created the exhibition Light, Bodies, Angles, where he used video projection on big scale drawings offering him a new way to experience dance and the possibility to meet a different audience. Now at a crossroad between dance and visual art, Dereck continue is path as a Dance Artist with a new medium onboard. His desire is to embraces this broader expression and challenge the experience both for audience and performer.
