Catch8: A festival of workshops focused on training, creativity, sharing and new opportunities for professional dancers.
Produced and curated by DI Associate Artist Luke Murphy / Attic Projects, CATCH8 returns follwoing sold out success in 2017. The 2018 festival of workshops takes place 16 - 23 June running in two sessions daily from 9:30am-12:30pm and 1:30pm-4:30pm.
These masterclass workshops will be taught by national and international leading dance professionals: Oona Doherty, Maxine Doyle, Jacquelyn Elder, James Finnemore, Ian Garside, Tamara Gvozdenovic, Luke Murphy, Liz Roche, Elie Tass and Pavel Zustiak and will take place in Millennium Hall at Cork City Hall, as part of Cork Midsummer Festival.
All registered students will receive special offers and discounts on performances and events throughout the Cork Midsummer Festival.
The Catch8 Workshop series is an initiative by Attic Projects in collaboration with Cork Midsummer Festival, Cork Arts Office, DanceIreland and supported by a supported by a 2018 Arts Council Travel and Training Award.

Oona Doherty is a dance artist based in Bangor, Co.Down, performing and creating internationally since 2010. Oona Studied at The London School Of Contemporary Dance, University of Ulster and LABAN London. BA Honours and Post Graduate in Contemporary Dance Studies. Previous collaborations include TRASH Dance (Netherlands), Abattoir Fermé (Belgium), and Emma Martin (Ireland). Oona’s choreography Hope Hunt & The Ascension into Lazarus was nominated for Best Production and won Best Performer for Oona at the Tiger Dublin Fringe 2016, Edinburgh Fringe Total Theatre Award 2017, The Place Dance Award Edinburgh Fringe 2017 and (Re)Connaissance Grenoble 1st Jury Prize 1st Audience Prize. It was also selected as an Aerowaves Twenty17 work with a European tour. Oona’s new work, Hard to be Soft – A Belfast Prayer, in a collaboration with David Holmes and the people of Belfast, is produced by Prime Cut Productions and premiered in October 2017 at the Belfast International Arts Festival. For this work she has been awarded Winner of the Major Individual from the Arts Council 2017. In 2016 she was the HATCH Artists in The MAC Theatre, Belfast; 2016/18 A prime Cut Productions REVEAL Artist; 2017/18 Maison La Dans Associate Artist Lyon and the 2017/19 La Briqueterie Associate Artist Paris.
Maxine is an independent choreographer and director. She is also Associate Director and Choreographer for Punchdrunk, with whom she has co-directed many works including multi-award winning Sleep No More (London, Boston, New York, Shanghai), The Drowned Man, Faust, Masque of the Red Death and Tunnel 228, Maxine’s most recent dance theatre creation for the stage - After Lethe - premiered at Staastheater Kassel in May, 2016. Maxine is also a principle artist at Springboard Danse Montreal where she created Hubris (2015) and Electric Sheep (2016). Future projects include performance project for b12 festival Berlin 2017 and a new creation with Strut Dance, Perth Australia for 2018.
Jacquelyn Elder was a member of the MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY from 2005 -2012 where she performed soloist roles in Martha Graham's Diversion of Angels, Cave of the Heart, Satyric Festival Song and Serenata Morisca as well as Robert Wilson's Snow on the Mesa. Jacquelyn is currently performing and touring internationally with Olivier Dubois's production AUGURI and TRAGEDIE as well as Liz Santoro and Pierre Godart's piece titled MAPS, which just premiered at the Atelier de Paris in November 2017. In 2018 she will be involved in a new creation by choreographer and Centre Choreographique National Orleans (France) director Maud Le Pladec, titled 27 Perspectives, which will premier at the Montpellier Danse Festival in July 2018.. Throughout the years she has had the privilege to work with artists such as Aszure Barton, Rachid Ouramdane, Robert Wilson, Larry Keigwin, Kate Weare, and Fabrice Samyn. Jacquelyn has taught workshops and master classes at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Hellerau (Dresden, Germany), DansenHus (Oslo, Norway), Centre Choreographique National (Lille, France), The Martha Graham School, Alvin Ailey/Fordham University, The Joffrey Ballet, as well as such festivals as the Biennale de danse in Lyon, France. Jacquelyn is currently directing a documentary on the MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY, titled, A Highwire of Circumstance. She splits her time between Brussels, Paris, and New York City and is excited by macrobiotic cuisine, foraging, mathematics, dreams, minimalist composers, and skateboarding.
As a dance artist, James has extensive touring and performance experience, working with Hofesh Shechter Company, Carte Blanche, Olivier Dubois, Gary Clarke and Punchdrunk. Alongside this, James has taught at various institutions and dance companies, delivering workshops and re-staging work from Hofesh Shechter's repertoire. Since 2016 James has been an associate artist at The Point Eastleigh.
Ian (UK/ES) discovered contemporary dance through theatre and classical acting - he completed a BA(Hons) at Laban, London, before studying at P.A.R.T.S. Brussels. Since 2010 he has performed with various renowned companies and independent choreographers, including Punchdrunk (Shanghai), Liquid Loft/ Chirs Haring (Vienna) and the seminal DV8 Physical Theatre (London). Alongside performance, Ian has taught in a multitude of contexts to all manner of students, from professionals to amateurs, children to over 70’s. Most notably he has delivered master classes, workshops and auditions for DV8 in such places as ImPulsTanz (Vienna), Institut del Teatre (Barcelona), the Onassis Cultural Centre (Athens), and Dancemakers (Toronto). Ian’s passion for teaching is fed by the variety of experiences and approaches that the participants bring to the encounter. This enriches his own practice in work and life.
Tamara (Cuprija – Serbia) graduated in 2010 at Trinity Laban. During her time in London she worked with Rosemary Butcher and Simon Vincenzi. She founded her own dance company in Switzerland in 2009 and produced Light Scream, Sainte Marie-Joseph de la Rose and Sous le Cou(p) du Lapin. In 2014 she joined Peeping Tom for the productions Vader and The Land. In 2016 she joined the Swiss choreographer Tabea Martin as a dancer for Beyond Indifference and assisted her choreographically for This is my Last Dance in 2018. Tamara lives in Brussels and teaches worldwide. She is currently working on her own production to be presented in 2019
Performer with Ultima Vez (2014-2017) touring internationally in productions Booty Looting, Spiritual Unity and In Spite of Wishing and Wanting Punchdrunk (2009-2017), as an Original Cast member of Sleep No More in New York City and Shanghai as well as productions of Sleep No More in Boston and The Drowned Man in London. Additional company experience includes Kate Weare Company (2011-2014), Pavel Zustiak Palissimo Company (2011-2013), Martha Clarke (2010-2011), Erik Hawkins Dance 2008-2010 and projects with, John Kelly, John Scott, Janis Brenner, Heidi Latsky, Sean Curran, Jonah Bokaer and Bill T Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Company. Luke is Artistic Director of Attic Projects- based between Ireland and New York. He has created five evening length works Drenched (2012), Icarus (2013) Your Own Man/Mad Notions (2015), On Triumph and Trauma (2016) The Dust We Raised (2017) performing across Ireland, UK and US. Luke is DanceIreland Associate Artist for 2018.
Elie Tass was born and grew up in Gent. At a young age he was very involved in a variety of sports, primarily martial arts and later on ballet, gymnastics and breakdance. After two years of studying Physical Education at the University of Gent (RUG), never having considered a future in dance, he embarked on a three year dance course at the Higher Institute for Dance (Antwerp). During and after his studies he was invited by Thierry Smits to work with Company Thor in Brussels (Petits Baigneurs and d’Orient) and Marc Bogaerts (Stabat Mater). In 2004 he worked with Jan Fabre/Troubleyn in Tannhäuser. Since 2005 he’s been working with Alain Platel/Les Ballets C de la B in the creations and touring of vsprs, pitié!, Out of Context – for Pina and Tauberbach. In 2012 he worked with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui for the creation of Puz/zle. During those years he also started research towards more personal work. For Queensland based contemporary dance company Dancenorth, he and Ross McCormack created (sic) as part of a double bill in 2011. Currently he is touring with nicht schlafen (the latest creation with Alain Platel/Les Ballets C de la B) and is developing a duet with Nicola Leahey. Liz is artistic director and choreographer of Liz Roche Company (formerly Rex Levitates). Currently Company-in -Residence at Dublin Dance Festival and Civic Theatre, her work for the company has been performed throughout Ireland and overseas, most notably at the South Bank Centre London, Baryshnikov Arts Center NY, Meet in Beijing Festival, Festival De La Nouvelle Danse Uzes and Brisbane Powerhouse.
Her 2015 piece Bastard Amber was co-commissioned and co-produced by the Abbey Theatre, Dublin Dance Festival and Kilkenny Arts Festival, and was the first time an Irish choreographer was commissioned to make a full length new work in the history of the Abbey Theatre, Ireland's National Theatre.
She has been commissioned to make choreographies for companies including the National Ballet of China, Scottish Dance Theatre, Cois Ceim, Arcane Collective, Croi Glan Integrated Dance, Maiden Voyage Dance. She has worked as movement director in Theatre and Opera on many productions for the Gate Theatre, Abbey Theatre and Landmark productions, as well as Rossini Opera Festival Pesaro, National Opera of Korea, Opernhaus Zurich, Opera Ireland, Liceu Barcelona and now in 2018, Irish National Opera. As a dancer she worked with choreographers John Jasperse (US), Jodi Melnick (US), Rosemary Butcher (UK), Christine Gaigg (Vienna), Cathala & Ramalingom (France) and in the work of Dominique Bagouet through Les Carnets Bagouet and Dance Theatre of Ireland, and with David Bolger (Cois Ceim) and John Scott (imdt).
Pavel Zuštiak is a Slovak-American NYC-based choreographer and director. He is the Bessie Juried Award winner for his “poetic layering of movement and visual imagery, conceiving the stage space as a decentralized world in which the corporeal body is the focus and canvas for a wide range of human expression,” a Princeton Arts Fellow and Guggenheim Fellow, recipient of LMCC President's Award for Excellence in Artistic Practice, and multiple winner of Princess Grace Awards. He holds degrees from the Theatre School in Amsterdam and University of Economics in Czechoslovakia.
